One blog too many

I’ve discovered that three blogs is too much for me to keep up with. And I have also discovered since starting this one, that there are millions of military websites. So I don’t really think that this one is needed even though I have loved it. It doesn’t get much traffic or comments and when the domain name expires I will be letting it go. There are still three months to go, so if anyone feels differently you have time to respond.

We decided to keep Covert Ops as a free audio download all the time. It actually wasn’t something I had sought out. My friend offered to do it for me, so why not pay it forward… It is a 37 minute commentary on Psalm 91 geared toward the military. It was written as a tiny book they could carry in their pockets always, so it’s there when they need support. Now they can have it on their ipods, so they can listen and build a relationship with God any time.

I’ve been struggling with the accident of a friend of mine. Forty years as a machinist and he cut off his hand. I know soldiers frequently deal with the loss of a limb. Is it any different because you knew it could happen? Does that ease the blow? Do you ever say, “At least I’m not dead”? Or does that make it harder because you fight wishing you were?

Trauma is hard enough to deal with without limb loss. Does it get easier if you learn to see your disability as a badge of honor? Is that even possible? I can’t even imagine what you deal with or how hard it must be. How hard you must work to keep your thoughts positive so you don’t sink into depression! I honor you.

And for the record, you aren’t any less of a person because you are missing a limb. Wholeness comes from inside. It’s more about the way one thinks and loves, one’s attitude, than body parts.

It just seemed like the right thing to do — extend the free audio download of Covert Ops until July 4. The news reported that today was the most costly day for American casualties in Iraq in two years. Most soldiers have Ipods, right? Many of them are needing comfort right now. So if you visit here and see this, tell all the soldiers you know, or their families. In fact send the website to anyone having a hard time. I was told by a retired soldier that it helped him tremendously when his wife died.

This war seems to be going on and on. And now the whole region is at war. Aside from freedom, which is huge, is there anything good that can come from war? You who have been there are the best able to answer this, but here are some of my musings. I know that PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) is one of the most prevailing and debilitating effects of war. That is part of war; you see things, experience things that are over-the-top for what a person is able to process. Weeks, months, even years later it can haunt you and affect your life and relationships. There is help for that since we learned about it after Vietnam. But is there anything good?

Maybe I am thinking about this because I saw a news segment about a kid whose parenting had been less than good, his brothers were into drugs, and he decided he wanted something different, so he enlisted. Now he is a specialist in bomb removal and feels so much better about himself and his life. He’s making a difference. Another thing I was thinking of was the bonding that soldiers talk about. Those relationships are closer than family, and part of what makes losing them after war so difficult. And sometimes people do turn to God because the craziness of war is just so great. Maybe there are some good things that come from it if you can allow yourself to perceive it.

Another letter
