#32 Satan is allowed to attempt to deceive Jesus

Satan comes disguised as an angel of light sent to Jesus by God to end his fast. If he can shake Christ’s confidence in God, he knows he will win the war. If he can get him to use his power for himself, the whole Godhead’s plan to save man will fail.

So he invites him to make bread from the stones around him, which look like loaves Jesus has eaten his whole life.

Imagine Satan saying, “A powerful angel has been banished from heaven and you look like that angel, God has obviously forsaken you. Why else would you be in such a state? He wouldn’t allow His son to starve.”

The struggle is fierce inside Jesus. But as soon as Satan says if, Jesus knows who he really is.

“If you are the son of God, turn these stones into bread.”

Nothing will be gained by proving anything.

He remembers his Father’s words at his baptism and rests in His love. Well Jesus knows how Moses and Elijah had been overcome by weariness and deprivation. He wouldn’t even argue with the enemy.

He will rely on God, and so he quotes words he himself had spoken centuries before, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from God.”

God had taken him to the wilderness; God will keep him there and bring him out.

Matthew 4:2-4,  Mark 1:12-13,  Luke 4:1-4
