#75 Forgiveness

A paralyzed man in Capernaum is helpless and dying. Friends tell him of Jesus’ healing power, but he doubts Jesus would want him in his presence. He knows his illness came from his sin and so refuses hope.

Finally, his friends convince him to let them carry him to Peter’s house where Jesus is teaching.

When they get there, the crowds are so large and dense they can’t get near Jesus. They attempt to push through in different places, but can’t.

Hope rises in getting so close to Jesus. If he could just tell me I’m forgiven! he thinks. That would be enough.

He suggests they go up to the roof and break up the tiles, and let him down from above.

What friends! They actually do it! Tear up Peter’s roof! Debris and dust falls on those below. But Jesus is not disturbed. Spirit has shown him this man’s desire to be forgiven–drawing him to Jesus who understands this need.

“Son, you’re free, your sins are forgiven,” He says to the man who has been lowered in front of him.

Relief floods the palsied man, who blissfully lays back, serene and happy, his face glowing.

The Rabbis, who administered God’s curse with the diagnosis, are there watching, horrified at the audacity of the man and Jesus! They exchange he-can’t-forgive-sin glances, thinking, This is blasphemy! Only God can forgive sin! Something must be done!

Many diseases begin in guilt and worry. Jesus heals his mind, and then body, destroying Satan’s work.*

Luke 5:17-21, Mark 2:1-7, *1John 3:8
