Know God in a Year #83 The Chosen

Jesus always enjoys being outdoors, especially with just his Father God, loving their time together. He loves sunrises, and this special dawn he has spent the entire night in prayer on the mountain while his followers sleep at the bottom. Today he will choose twelve men to spend the next two years in his constant presence.

Twelve common men will represent him to Israel and later to the world. Six of them have spent much of the last year with him–John and Andrew following from John the Baptist’s endorsement.

John brought James, his brother; they had been with him the longest. Some think they were his cousins. James and John, Jesus calls the “Sons of Thunder,” known for their hot-headed tempers. As is the Canaanite zealot, Simon, devout hater of Rome.

John was the youngest of all the disciples, and opened his heart completely with the confident trust of a child. He is considered the closest to Jesus by the others. He is deep and feeling, a fiery contemplative.

Andrew had gotten his brother Peter* who is generous and sympathetic, but Peter is also impulsive, often making rash judgments before having a full understanding.

Matthew has just recently heard, “Follow me.” Philip had been first to hear these words,* and he had brought Nathaniel. Philip is sincere and quick to share, but slow in believing and accepting Jesus words. Like Thomas, often his responses show disbelief, needing evidence.** Nathaniel studied to resolve his doubt about Jesus’ poverty–so different from what he’d been taught and expected–but now he is devoted.***

Besides these are Bartholomew (the encourager), another James (son of Alphaeus), another Judas (aka Thaddaeus) and finally Judas Iscariot.

Luke 6:12-16, Mark 3:13-19, Matthew 10,  *John 1:40-43, Matthew 4:18-22  **John 14:5-11  ***John 1:45-51
